Insulating On A Budget? Get Your Priorities Straight — Start With The Attic

Insulating On A Budget? Get Your Priorities Straight -- Start With The AtticInsulating your home is a smart way to save money on your heating and cooling costs and to make your house more comfortable when hot or cold temperatures take control outside. However, for anyone insulating on a budget, price can be a major obstacle. Insulating an entire house can be very cost-effective in the long run, but the initial cash outlay can be intimidating.

If you need to insulate but can’t justify the expense of doing the whole house at once, one of the more effective areas you can insulate is your attic. Many attics are large open areas that are difficult to heat or cool. Unsealed cracks, holes or gaps around the areas where the roof meets the walls can be a major source of energy leaks. Without adequate insulation in the roof, wall or attic floor, energy can be lost even when there are no cracks or holes.

Choose attic insulation with the highest R-value possible. The R-value represents the insulation’s ability to resist heat, and higher R-values mean better protection against temperature extremes.

  • Roll insulation, also known as batts or blankets, works well between beams and joists in the attic wall, floor or roof. This type of attic insulation is made of fiberglass or other mineral fibers
  • Loose-fill insulation, consisting of fiberglass, cellulose, or rock wool pellets or fibers can be blown into spaces needing insulation. Loose-fill insulation is a good choice to use where it’s difficult to place other forms of insulation.
  • Rigid foam insulation is a more expensive option than fiber-based attic insulation, but it gives you higher R-values and insulates better than other types.
  • Foam-in-place insulation is another type that can be blown into place using pneumatic equipment. It’s most often blown into walls and can be effective at sealing cracks and open areas around doors, windows and access panels.
