Before Temperatures Get Harsh, Schedule Your Annual Furnace Service

Before Temperatures Get Harsh, Schedule Your Annual Furnace ServiceFall is quickly drawing to a close, which means it’s time to schedule your heating system’s annual preventative maintenance check before the winds and snows of winter hit.

Annual furnace maintenance will keep your heating system in prime operating condition throughout the season. It will improve the unit’s heating efficiency, which will let it use less fuel for the same amount of heating. A well-maintained furnace does not have to run as hard to keep up with your home’s heating demands, which cuts down on wear and tear on the unit. If you perform regular maintenance on your furnace, you’ll be able to catch small problems and fix them before they become major trouble. Above all, annual furnace maintenance prevents furnace breakdowns when you need home heating the most.

Some types of routine maintenance you can do yourself, such as cleaning or changing filters and performing general cleaning on your HVAC unit, vents and registers. Pay particular attention to the filters and make sure to install new, fresh ones. Dirty filters are a major cause of furnace breakdowns and malfunctions.

Your HVAC technician will give your entire heating system a thorough inspection, from the furnace’s internal parts to the farthest points of the ductwork system. Here are some of the things your HVAC expert will do during an annual service call:

  • Check fuel connections and pressure
  • Inspect and adjust burners
  • Clean combustion chambers
  • Calibrate thermostat
  • Tighten belts
  • Lubricate fans, motors and moving parts
  • Check and clean condensate drain
  • Inspect wiring and electrical connections to make sure they are tight and undamaged
  • Check and calibrate limit controls
  • Check unit amperage
  • Inspect heat exchanger for cracks or holes that could release carbon monoxide
  • Inspect flue pipe and exhaust/venting systems
  • Test for carbon monoxide in the air near the furnace and around your house
